Last night we went to a new place called ‘Acoustic Bar’ which is a live music venue. It’s popular with Vietnamese people around my age with disposable income. (A LOT of disposable income because a can of coke alone cost $4!) For a bar here, It was really nice inside, decorated like Orange Rooms (point of reference for Southampton people) or maybe like a nice bar on the Barbican (point of reference for Plymouth people, if you are from neither of these places I apologise). Seeing as most bars are either aimed at tourists and most Vietnamese people prefer to drink at street places, this was a great find.
Here is a photo and some main points (seeing as I am trying to be more concise with my blog entries!)
1) No one dances, they all sat very quietly on chairs and watched the band in a very reserved way. Even if it was a really good song. They’re not bored though; they must like it because the place was rammed and we were the only westerners.
2) I’m not sure they knew the meaning of the word ‘acoustic’ seeing as there was an electric guitar and bass and lots of heavy drumming.
3) One band, made up primarily of ‘metal’ looking guys, did a rock version of Abba’s ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme’ which was hilarious. I don’t even think they were trying to be ironic.
4) It’s completely normal apparently to cover Lady Gaga, Abba and Radiohead in the same set.
I absolutely loved it and I’m taking everybody who comes to visit!
